UPI fee: Why govt is putting a price on big merchant payments

India’s UPI network will implement a merchant discount rate from October 15. This new charge applies to person-to-merchant UPI payments exceeding two thousand rupees. The National Payments Corporation of India will use revenue for infrastructure and security. This move ends a zero-merchant discount rate regime in place since 2020. Most everyday small merchant transactions will remain free of any charge.
