RBI’s currency printing cost falls 23.5% in FY26 despite rise in cash circulation

Reserve Bank of India’s currency printing costs dropped significantly in 2025-26. This occurred even as the total value of banknotes in circulation increased. The Rs 500 note remains dominant. Cash preference persists in India. The e-rupee’s circulation also saw a decline. RBI plans to enhance banknote security and durability.
