India scraps capital gains tax on foreign investors in government debt to support rupee

India will exempt foreign institutional investors and the Bank for International Settlements from capital gains tax on government securities. This move aims to attract more stable foreign capital. The exemption will take effect from April 1, 2026. This decision is expected to improve post-tax returns for overseas investors. It will also support greater participation in Indian government securities.
