New Delhi: The Income Tax Department informed a Parliamentary panel that two-thirds of the Rs 43 lakh crore outstanding direct tax demand is difficult to collect, with some of it being fictitious. The panel recommended a thorough review of the tax assessment system and proposed interventions to address the huge backlog of demand arrears.
